Absentees

Children are to be in school except in cases of emergency or illness. Regular daily attendance is critical for success at Salem School. When a youngster is going to be absent, we ask that you call 720-5242 to let us know your child is at home. If it becomes necessary for a student to miss class for an extended period, we ask that the school be notified so teachers can prepare for your child.

Arriving on time is also very important. Students who do not begin the day with their classmates miss the routines that help set the tone for the day. Chronic tardiness also gives the child a message that being on time is not really important.

Visitors

All parents and visitors must report to the office to sign in and obtain permission to go anywhere in the building

Accurate Records

If your telephone number, address, place of employment, emergency telephone numbers, etc. should change during the school year, please let the school know. A note to your child’s teacher is all you need to do. Accurate records are important, particularly in the case of emergency.

Report Cards

Grades one through four receive report cards four times per year; kindergarten receives a report card three times per year. Parent- Teacher conferences are scheduled in November. Parents must attend a conference to receive their child’s report card. Progress is also discussed at this conference. Parents are encouraged to get to know their child’s teacher and contact them as the need arises. You may call the school to request an appointment or send a note to the teacher via your child to request an appointment.

Food Allergies

Some students have allergies to specific types of food. While most reactions are mild, some children could have severe reactions. Today many food items are premixed, precooked, and prepackaged. Younger children may not be able to select foods that are safe for them to eat. Older children are generally able to make sound choices.

The only safe way to ensure that your child does not ingest an item to which he or she is likely to have a severe reaction is for you to provide all your child’s food. Please let the school nurse and your child’s teacher know about food allergies.

School Cancellations and Early Dismissals

School cancellations or delayed opening announcements will be noted on local radio and television stations. Please do not call the school on such days checking for the cancellations or delayed openings.

When school must be closed early due to weather conditions, children should have clear instructions as to what to do. In some cases, early dismissals due to weather conditions may be earlier than scheduled early dismissals. Your child should always know where to go upon any school closing situations.

Kindergarten children should bring in a daily snack. They may purchase milk each Monday for the week..

Media Photographs

From time to time during the school year local newspapers or TV stations come into the school to feature classroom and special activities. They often take pictures of students to complete the article. If you do not want your child’s picture in the newspaper or on TV, please indicate in writing in a note to your child’s teacher. Student pictures on this Internet site will also honor such requests.

Student Appearance

Clothing worn to school should be neat, clean, and appropriate. We ask that students do not wear tank tops or short shorts. For safety reasons students should not wear clogs, sandals, or high heels.

Students dressed inappropriately will be removed from class until a change of clothes can be brought to school.

Please keep in mind that children go outside for recess almost every day, except in inclement weather or severe heat or cold conditions.

Homework Policy

Homework is an integral part of the educational process. The assigned homework serves several purposes; it provides opportunities for students to reinforce and practice newly acquired skills and help students to prepare for class participation.

Parents will be informed of their child’s homework requirements at our annual open house in September and through notices sent home by your child’s teacher.

Parent School Association

We encourage all families to join our PSA which meets the first Wednesday of the month. It is through the wonderful efforts of this group that class trips are funded, assemblies take place, and our library flourishes. Working together we can provide our children with these enriching experiences. Please consider helping in one or more of the numerous events that take place all year long. You will surely find the experience to be enjoyable as you help the students of Salem School. Thank you for volunteering your time and fine efforts.
