General

Students are expected to behave in a courteous and respectful manner to all. This assures a quiet and well mannered school for every student and staff member.

Students at Salem School will be expected to:

  1. Show respect to other students and adults.
  2. Follow classroom rules set by individual teachers.
  3. Not fight.
  4. Use appropriate language at all times.
  5. Respect school property and the property of others.

Our goal is for children to feel empowered to succeed. They will learn to take responsibility by:

  1. Understanding and accepting consequences for their actions.
  2. Completing assignments.
  3. Understanding the effect they have on others.
  4. Apologizing.

The sections that follow outline expectations of student behavior, procedures, rules, and consequences for entering and exiting school, in the classroom, playground, and the cafeteria. A sample letter giving warning of detention is also included with this page.

Entering Salem School

Expectations:
Salem School students will demonstrate respect and responsibility upon entering school and school grounds.

Procedures:
Upon Entering School grounds students will:

  1. Pay for hot lunch.
  2. Proceed directly to their class line.
  3. Remain directly behind the person in from of them.
  4. Speak in whisper voices until the bell rings or hand signals.
  5. All entry into the building will be by the back doors.

Upon entering the school building students will:

  1. Walk single file only.
  2. Use side stairs only.
  3. Put belongings away before entering their classroom.
  4. Upon recess entry students will be escorted to classroom by the duty personnel.

Rules:

  1. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  2. Walk at all times.
  3. The bell or hand signal equals complete silence.

Consequences:

  1. Loss of recess for breaking the rules.
  2. After three losses of recess, a detention will be given.
  3. For habitual inappropriate behaviors, a conference with the student, parents, and the principal will occur.

Classroom

Expectations:
Salem School students will show respect, responsibility, and cooperation in the classroom at all times.

Procedures:

  1. Students will follow individual classroom procedures and rules.
  2. Students will show kindness and acceptance toward all members.
  3. Students will listen and respond in a polite and appropriate manner.
  4. Students will walk at all times.
  5. Students will speak in appropriate voices.
  6. Students will be polite and courteous at all times.
  7. Students will show age appropriate behaviors at all times.

Rules:

  1. Keep hands, feet, objects to yourself.
  2. Be truthful at all times.
  3. Use appropriate language at all times.
  4. Complete assignments in a neat and timely fashion.

Consequences:

  1. Loss of recess for breaking the rules.
  2. After three losses of recess a detention will be given.
  3. For habitual inappropriate behaviors, a conference with the student, parents, and the principal will occur.

Playground

Expectations
All children at Salem School will play in a safe, orderly, and cooperative manner.

Procedures:

  1. Proceed quietly to playground.
  2. Display good sportsmanship in all activities.
  3. Promptly and quietly line up when the bell rings.

Rules:

  1. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  2. Be polite and courteous at all times.
  3. Remain within the boundaries of the playground at all times.
  4. Use appropriate language.

Consequences:

  1. Loss of recess for breaking the rules.
  2. After three losses of recess, a detention will be given.
  3. For habitual inappropriate behaviors, a conference with the student, [parents, and the principal will occur.

Cafeteria

Expectations:
All members of Salem School will demonstrate respect to one another in the cafeteria.

Procedures:

  1. Be prepared when you come to the cafeteria.
  2. Raise your hand if you need help.
  3. Keep your space clean.
  4. Use a whisper voice.
  5. Walk quietly and slowly.

Rules:

  1. Stay in your seat at all times unless you have permission to move.
  2. Keep hands, feet, objects to yourself.
  3. All children will be silent and still when the quiet sign is shown.

Consequences:

  1. Loss of recess for breaking the rules.
  2. After three losses of recess, a detention will be given.
  3. For habitual inappropriate behaviors, a conference with the student, [parents, and the principal will occur.

Exiting Salem School

Expectations:
Salem School students will demonstrate respect and responsibility when exiting the school building.

Procedures:

When exiting the school building students will:

  1. Proceed quietly to their class line.
  2. Remain directly behind the person in front of them.
  3. Speak in whisper voices.
  4. All exits from the building will be by the back doors.
  5. Students are not to reenter the building after dismissal.
  6. If attending an after school program, the student will remain in line while waiting for all participants.
  7. Bus students are to remain in line and wait quietly.

Rules:

  1. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  2. Walk at all times.
  3. The bell or the hand signal equals complete silence.

Consequences:

    1. Loss of recess for breaking the rules.
    2. After three losses of recess, a detention will be given.
    3. For habitual inappropriate behaviors, a conference with the student, [parents, and the principal will occur.
