Meeting Date: 9/3/08 Minutes: The
meeting was called to order at 7:01pm and said the Pledge of Allegiance. Approval
of Minutes: Caryn
Robinson made a motion to approve the minutes from 5/7 and 6/3. Jessica
Williams seconded the motion. The motion was carried. Presidents
Report:
President Diane Parzyck introduced the 2008-09 PTO Board and discussed the
duties and functions of the PTO. She discussed upcoming events: The BTS Ice
Cream Social will be on 9/19 and we will have the same DJ as last year (Critical
Entertainment). Volunteers are needed-notices will go home. The Fall Festival
will be on 10/17. Volunteers are needed for this event as well. Requests will
be coming home and a sign-up is available at the meeting. First
Vice President Sherri Hopkins discussed specifics on where the PTO funds go
and advised that the goal for the profit from the fundraiser is $10K (we
earned $9K LY). She gave a “pop quiz” to the group regarding PTO and
fundraising facts. The website for the fundraising company is www.gafundraising.com. The dates of
the fundraiser 8/29 thru 9/18 with a tentative pick-up date of 10/15. The
registration code is incorrect on the flyer-the correct one is 968230. Sherri
also advised that the membership drive would be moving forward and asked that
everyone fill out the forms completely. Box
Tops coordinators Shannon Shea-Lyons and Tracy O’Connell reported that the
summer box tops drawing would take place on 9/5 and that the regular drawings
will take place every 6 weeks. The first one will be on 10/10. They handed
out a minimal supply of “double box-tops” flyer that would give double the
credit to box tops turned. Tina
McSweeny, RN-the school nurse will be taking over as Campbell’s Label
Coordinator. Terri
Kummer, night manager at the Big Y in Naugatuck and Mary Bode presented the
“Education Express” program to the group. Items at the store will be marked
with a school bus and for items purchased, money will go the school of the
customer’s choice. They advised that if you were signed up before when the
program was in place you must sign up again because all old records were
removed and the program is entirely new and is starting over from scratch.
Several years ago the High School earned almost $24K from the program. President
Diane Parzyck advised that hopefully babysitting will be available from the
Girl Scouts. They need to begin their program year first and notices will
reflect whether there is babysitting or not. Last
year’s PSC representative Kim Schulte advised that she was not able to act as
the Maple Hill rep this year and asked for another volunteer to be the school
representative. She discussed the function of the PSC and advised that the
first meeting will be at Cross Street School on 9/29 at 7pm. Diane
Parzyck also asked for a BOE representative to attend monthly BOE meetings on
the 3rd Thursday of every month. Principals
Report:
Principal Cheryl Kane welcomed everyone. She announced that we have 470
students this year and welcomed all the new faculty members. She thanked
intern Christine Macguire for setting up and filling in for new Kindergarten
teacher Mrs. Bothroyd for the first month of school. There
are new cameras inside the school and a buzzer for entry to the school. She
thanked the PTO for the many activities that they planned. She asked that
parents notify the office of pick-ups in writing. Open House will be on 9/10
and there will be early dismissal. She
passed out CMT results and advised that Maple Hill did not make AYP for
Reading. She asked for parental support to assist in improving reading
proficiency. She
thanked everyone for attending the Education Fair. She reminded everyone that
she will “Kiss a Pig” at the Fall Festival to reward the students for reading
over the summer. Teachers
Report: PTO
Teacher Representative Pamela Fickel asked for volunteers for the Guided
Reading Program and discussed the logistics and benefits of the Guided
Reading Program. 1st grade is at 9:05am, 2nd grade is
at 9:50am and 3rd grade is at 10:35am. Please contact her if you
want to volunteer. fickelp@naugy.net.
Library Teacher Debra Wilson also asked for volunteers for Library and
Computer Lab. Notices for both have been sent home. Treasurers
Report: Treasurer
Shirley Koslosky reviewed last year’s budget and this year’s budget. We will
present the budget at the October meeting and vote to accept the budget in
November. She reported that the balance in the General Fund is $14,876.64 and
the balance in the Library Fund is $2,107.69. New
Business:
President Diane Parzyck asked for volunteers from the 4th grade
parents to help organize fundraising and the end of year celebration for the
4th graders. Ray
Santiago suggested having craft events during parent functions and selling
the student made crafts as a potential fundraiser. First
Vice President Sherri Hopkins suggested making a book to sell to the school
or stand-up cook books as potential fundraisers. The
meeting was adjourned at 8:10pm. Minutes are pending
approval at next PTO meeting scheduled for 10/01/08 at 7pm.
