Principals Report: Ms. Kane announced that the summer reading event was going to begin.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:40pm.

PTO Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date: 05/07/08

Minutes:

The meeting was called to order at 7:10pm and said the Pledge of Allegiance.

Approval of Minutes: Caryn Robinson made a motion to approve the minutes from Novembers meeting. Lisa Herchenroether seconded the motion. The motion was carried.

Presidents Report: President Diane Parzyck thanked the volunteers for Bingo Night, the Book Fair and for Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTO sent flowers to Nurse Tina McSweeny for Nurse Appreciation Week. June 13th is the End of the Year event-Rockcats Baseball Game. MHS students pay $2/ticket and all others pay $4/ticket. Gates open at 5:05pm, game starts at 6:35pm. Box Tops for Education sent us a check for $800. The last collection will be June 6th. Recording Secretary Kim Schulte cast one vote to accept the nominating committee slate for the PTO board for 2008-09. The slate was accepted and the following officers were elected:

                President:                             Diane Parzyck

                First Vice President:            Sherri Hopkins

                Second Vice President:      Sandy Minasian

                Treasurer:                             Shirley Koslosky

                Recording Secretary:          Kim Schulte

                Corresponding Secretary: Jeannette Wheeler

Treasurers Report: President Diane Parzyck reported that the balance in the general account is $19,631.24 and the balance in the library account is $7,351.00.

Principals Report: Principal Cheryl Kane thanked the parents for baking and cooking for Teacher Appreciation Week. She then reviewed the May/June Calendar. There are 29 days left to the last day of school. Hats Off for Kids is on 5/21. The fourth grade will visit Cross Street School on 5/27. June 11th will be a “Picnic in the Park” event (a concert for the 3rd and 4th grade music/recorders.) The last day of school is June 18th. Part of the District Improvement Plan is to improve attendance at the PTO meetings. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Suggestions included meetings centered around specific grades, reading incentive nights and raffle prizes. It was proposed that we try to have a reading incentive night in conjunction with the June PTO meeting because Diane Parzyck advised that there are additional RIF books available. June 10th is parent orientation for incoming Kindergarteners. The PTO board will attend to introduce themselves and offer refreshments.

Teachers Report: Teacher Representative Pamela Fickel thanked the PTO and the Room Moms for the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon and for the gifts. She thanked the Literacy Volunteers. She will advise at a later date when Guided Reading will end for the year.

New Business: First Vice President Sherri Hopkins reported that Catherine Beich was bought out, but everything should be OK for the Fall Fundraiser. Future fundraisers are pending. She requested assistance with the Popsicle Party for May 23rd-this was the incentive for participation in the Spring Fundraiser. Sherri Hopkins and Lisa Herchenroether updated the PTO on the status of the AED’s at all the schools. Naugatuck Heart Safe Association has raised $13,500, enough for 9 AED’s. They have secured a grant for an additional 3 AED’s. 12 AED’s officially makes Naugatuck a heart safe community! 4 elementary schools will received the CPR training for the 4th graders. MHS will be June 6th in the morning. A grant was received for the HS to receive training for the teachers as well. City Hill and Hillside will be presented an AED each. Sherri requested that everyone join the Naugatuck Chapter of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association. The website is www.suddencardiacarrest.org. Lisa Herchenroether reported that the 4th grade raised a total of $1,407.55 in addition to the $700 PTO budget. The Gizmo Guys will be the entertainment for the party on June 6th.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50pm.

Minutes are pending approval at next PTO meeting scheduled for 6/4/08 at 7pm (tentatively pending the proposal above for a combination Reading Incentive Night.)
