School Handbook
ABSENCES  should not occur without parental consent.  Written excuses for all absences must be submitted to the office upon return.  The office will make determination of excused and unexcused absences.  If your child is not going to be in school, parents are asked to notify the office (720-5231) before 8:30 A.M.  If a call is not received, the child's absence will be considered an unexcused absence.  Absent students cannot attend after school activities on the day of the absence.

ADMINISTRATOR of Hop Brook Intermediate School is principal, Steve Zepecki and Maria Zillo is the Assistant Principal.  Commitment is to the educational excellence and well being of "our" children.

ANIMALS are not allowed on school property during the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 3:30 P.M.

APPOINTMENTS for students should be made for after school hours.  Time lost from class tends to be irretrievable in terms of opportunity for instructional interaction.

ARRIVAL  of the students occurs from 8:15 to 8:20 A.M.  Students using alternate transportation should not arrive before 8:15 A.M.  If you are late, report to the office.

ART INSTRUCTION is provided for all students.  A variety of materials and media are used to encourage children to present their thinking and creativity through many varied and unusual projects.

ASSEMBLY programs require certain regulations.  A good performance depends on “respect”, courtesy, and cooperation from all students.  They should walk quietly to the performance and sit in the assigned area.  Loud disruptions and talking during performances is not acceptable.

ATTENDANCE contributes to student achievement and success in school.  The Board of Education and Connecticut State Law requires regular school attendance.  Excessive absences are a drain of the resources of teachers and administrators, and a disservice to the education of the child.

BALLS from home are not allowed in school. The school will provide balls for the children if needed at the Intermediate Level.

BICYCLES are not to be ridden to school because of various safety factors.  No bicycles are allowed on school property until all buses have left.

BOOKS AND SUPPLIES are supplied by the Board of Education along with a reasonable supply of paper and pencils.  These materials remain the property of the school.  We strongly urge care and safe-keeping of these materials.  All hardcover books loaned must be covered.  Covers must be provided by the students.  Fines will be assessed for damages.  Students who fail to pay for lost or damaged books will not receive report cards at the end of the school year.

BOOK ORDERS: Children can purchase inexpensive books on a monthly basis.  Please make checks payable to the book company for the correct amount and place in a sealed envelope with your child's name, grade, and date.

BUS SERVICE for the Naugatuck Public Schools is contracted through Ryder Transportation, 723-1900.  Students are expected to remain seated, to use quiet voices, and behave in a manner which will insure the safety of all passengers.  Students who misbehave on the bus may be assigned a seat by the driver or a school administrator.  In the case of repeated or severe behavior problems, a student may be suspended from the bus and the parents are responsible for transportation. Buses are not to be used to transport students to go to the home of a friend.

BUS STOP monitors, please make sure there are no balls at the bus stops.

CALENDAR for the 2006-2007 academic school year will be sent home separately.

CLOSING of school or delays due to inclement weather or other conditions will be broadcast over the radio stations: WTIC Hartford, WATR, Waterbury, between 6:00 and 7:30 a.m.  Do not call the office unless absolutely necessary.  If the children must vacate the building in an emergency, they will go to Prospect Street School.( See Contingency Plan)

CLOTHING for students should be appropriate for activities.  All students are expected to groom and dress themselves in clothes that are suitable for school.  Please use reasonable judgment when dressing for school. Also, no short shorts or halter-tops are to be worn to school.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES such as chicken pox, measles, German measles, mumps, whooping cough, scarlet fever, streptococcus sore throat (strep throat), impetigo, scabies, ringworm, pediculosis (head lice), conjunctivitis (pink eye), etc., must be reported to the school nurse at 720-5233.  She will relate our health policy at that time.

COMPUTER instruction is provided for students in grades five and six in the computer lab.

CONTINGENCY PLAN listen to the radio stations for school cancellations, school delays, and/or the closing of school early. Please have a contingency plan ready and understood by your child should school need to be closed prior to 3:25 p.m.  Listen to the radio on inclement weather days. RADIO STATIONS; WATR - 1320 AM, WTIC - 1080 AM, WKCI - 101 AM, WWCO - 1240 - AM, WELI - 960 AM, WQQW - 1590 AM. Please do not call the school. Normally two sessions (am and pm kindergarten) are offered on a late opening day or early dismissal.

CONFERENCE DATES may be initiated by administrators, teachers, or  parents at any time during the academic school year.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES alcohol and tobacco products are prohibited in all Naugatuck Schools.

DANGEROUS SITUATIONS GUIDELINES  ASSAULT - in its base definition includes causing intentional physical injury to another, or recklessly causing physical injury to another.  WEAPONS OR DANGEROUS INSTRUMENTS: the possession, brandishing or throwing of  any weapon or dangerous instrument includes but is not limited to guns, knives, or any other instrument which under the circumstances, is capable of causing physical harm.  GANG INVOLVEMENT:  Situations where conduct or organization, related to gang or cult activities, promotes violence, tumultuous or threatening behavior.

DELAY/EARLY DISMISSAL If we have a two hour delay, school will start at 10:20 A.M.  Planned early dismissal is at 1:00 P.M.

DISCIPLINE is explained as follows:  Appropriate student behavior is expected at all times at Hop Brook School and when representing Hop Brook in any capacity.  All students, teachers, administrators, and parents should work together to provide an atmosphere to learning.
Each student is dealt with as an individual and all areas of the situation will be considered.
If referral is given to an administrator, a student conference will take place.  Emphasis will focus on what the problem is, why it occurred and ways of handling the situations more successfully in the future. In a democratic society, it is the right of every citizen to be provided with the opportunity of obtaining an education.  With each right comes some responsibility not to interfere with another person’s right to learn.

DISMISSAL from school during the school day requires a note to the teacher at the beginning of the school day.  The pupil must be picked up at the main office.  Children are not allowed to leave school for appointments without a parent or an adult. Please sign your child out in the sign out book in the office.  

DON'T TELL US THE SKY'S THE LIMIT WHEN THERE ARE FOOTPRINTS ON THE MOON.

DRUG FREE WORK PLACE - No employee of the Naugatuck Public Schools shall unlawfully manufacture, distribute, dispense, possess or use on or in the workplace any alcoholic beverage, narcotic drug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbiturate, marijuana, or any other controlled substance, as defined in schedules I through V of section 202 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 812).  Workplace is defined to mean the site for the performance of work done including: any school building or premises; any school owned/leased vehicle used to transport students to and from school, or school sponsored activities; any school sponsored or approved activity where students are under the jurisdiction of Naugatuck Public Schools.  As a condition of employment, each employee shall abide by the terms of the Naugatuck Public Schools policy respecting a drug-free workplace.  Any violation of this policy by an employee shall be subject to disciplinary action which may include immediate dismissal.  Sanctions against employees including non-renewal, suspension, termination shall be in accordance with prescribed Naugatuck Public Schools policies and administrative procedures.

EMERGENCY FORMS will be distributed at the beginning of the school year.  It is imperative that these forms be returned to the teacher as soon as possible in order that, in case of emergency, parents can be reached immediately.  Please update the teacher/ office regarding any change in phone number or address.

FIELD TRIPS are taken from time to time as an extension of classroom activities.  Parental permission forms are sent home and must be filled out and returned at specified time.  Verbal permission will not be accepted.

FOOD ALLERGIES  Some students have allergies to specific types of foods.  While most reactions may be mild, some children could have severe reactions.  Today many food items are pre-mixed, pre-cooked or pre-packaged.  Younger children may not be aware of their allergies or may not be able to select foods which are safe for them to eat.  Older children generally are able to make sound choices.  The only safe way to ensure that your child does not ingest an item to which he or she is likely to have a severe allergic reaction is for you to provide your child’s food and to stress to your child that he or she is not to ingest anything other than what you provide.

Please let the school nurse know about your child’s food allergies in case a reaction occurs.

HOMEWORK assignments are given to reinforce and augment the lessons taught in class.  They help students develop responsibility, proper work and study habits, and give parents the opportunity to provide support and recognition.  Assignments are determined by teachers in accordance with the needs of student, grade level, and the objectives of the curriculum.  Homework is considered in grading. ( For makeup work due to absences, see MAKE-UP WORK).

HOURS for school are as follows:
   Classes Begin- 8:20 A.M.                       Classes End- 2:50 P.M.

ILLNESS may require a child to be sent home.  The nurse will notify the parent or, if not available, the person noted on the emergency form.  A telephone contact number must be included to insure notification in the event of a student’s need to be dismissed due to illness. (This is why it is so important to return the emergency questionnaire as soon as possible.)  If information on the emergency  form is changed during the year, please notify the office.  When a child returns to school after being absent because of illness, he/she must bring a note giving the reason for absence.

INSURANCE programs are available to all students.  Parents who wish to purchase individual accident insurance will be provided with the necessary information and forms early in the school year.

INTERNET FORM: Please review and return this form so the students may/may not use the Internet under strict supervision of the teacher.

INVITATIONS for birthdays and parties are not to be distributed during school,  and buses are not to be used to transport children to such events.

LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER gives all children the opportunity to do research and borrow books.  Students will have access to the media center through their classes, and at the discretion of their teachers.  No food or drinks are to be brought into the Media Center.

LOCKERS are to be kept neat and clean with school material/supplies only.

LOST AND FOUND items are located in the cafeteria.  Students are encouraged to check frequently for missing items.  Parents are encouraged to label all articles of clothing and lunch boxes.

LUNCH and milk are served every day, provided by the Marriott Corporation.  Hot lunches can be bought daily for $1.75 and additional milk is $.35.  Lunches can be paid on a weekly basis or per day. Children may carry their lunch and purchase milk at the above price.  Please do not send children with glass bottles. Sharing of food for students with no lunch is discouraged. Everyone is expected to have their own lunch or purchase one.  If a student forgets a lunch he/she may charge for that day, or charge it. Use of lunch money to buy snacks and ice cream in lieu of lunch is discouraged.

Rules and regulations regarding student behavior in the lunchroom are explained to every student  by the principal and the classroom teacher at the beginning of the academic school year.
1. Walk at all times in the cafeteria. 2. Stay seated and converse quietly while eating lunch. 3.Always leave a clean area. 4. Wait quietly for dismissal. 5. Always be respectful to others. Students are not to take food or drink out of the cafeteria area.
Applications for free lunch programs, based on family need, are available through the office.

MAKE-UP WORK will be available to children who miss school due to illness, emergencey, or other exceptional circumstances.  Please provide a written note for all excused absences.

MEDICATIONS are dispensed by the school nurse on order of a physician only. The state form may be picked up at the Nurse’s office. These medications must be contained in original prescription bottle from the pharmacy with the proper label and locked in the Nurse’s office. No more than 45 pills. Non-prescription medications must be brought to school in an unopened container.  All medications must be brought to school by a parent.   No prescription or over -the-counter medications can be dispensed by the nurse without written authorization from the physician, including Tylenol, throat lozenges, cough medicine, creams, or lotions  Medications should not be brought to school by the student.

MUSIC instruction is provided to all students in grades five and six.  A variety of activities will be presented to encourage musical involvement and interaction.  Instrumental music is offered also.  Students taking an instrument lesson will register early in the school year.

NEWSPAPERS often find what is happening in the schools newsworthy and frequently write about and take pictures of the students.  Any parent who would object to the possibility of having their child's picture appear in the newspaper is asked to notifiy the school principal in writing.

NONDISCRIMINATION-SEXUAL HARASSMENT/INTIMIDATION POLICY
All people shold be treated with respect.  Sexual harassment has been clearly established as a form of sexual discrimination.  Sexual harassment is defined as followed:  Any intention or unintentional un welcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, when (1) submission to such conduct is made whether explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of employment, occupation or education (2) submission or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment or education decisons affecting the individual or (3) such conduct has the purpsoe of effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's work, education, performance, or creating an intimidating, hostile of offensive working environment.

Specific behaviors (that are wanted/unwanted and sexual in nature) that could constitute sexual harassment are (but not limited to): touching sexual name calling, jokes/cartoons/posters, pulling at clothes, verbal comments, sexual rumors, too personal a conversation, cornering/blocking, suggestive facial expressions.

NURSE - Mrs. Patricia Lawlor is a registered nurse and is at Hop Brook.  In addition to rendering first aid when needed, she also keeps a complete health record on each student. Any student coming into our system must show proof of physical and immunization at the time of registration. Please notify the school any communicable diseases such as head lice, strep., chicken pox etc.

OPEN HOUSE for parents was held on Thursday, August 21st.  Another one is being planned for an evening in October.

PARENT / TEACHER COMMUNICATIONS at Hop Brook Intermediate School are encouraged through: 1. Report Cards. 2. Progress Report 3. parent conferences. 4. phone calls, notes, home visits etc.

PERMISSION SLIPS must be brought to school if your child goes home other than the usual way.  Notes are necessary for after-school activities or parent pick-ups.  Please send notes with your child to give  classroom teachers upon arrival.  Phone calls are discouraged unless it is an emergency.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION is required for all students.  A signed note from the student's physician is required to be excused from gym.  Sneakers are necessary for children to participate in various activities.

PLANNING AND PLACEMENT TEAM (PPT) meetings, by law, must identify students of special education.  A student so identified will follow and individual educational program (IEP) constructed by the PPT.  The PPT is also responsible for monitoring student progress and adapting the IEP when needed.  All PPT’s include an administrator, psychologist, special education teacher, social worker (when needed), classroom teacher(s), and other support personnel ( as needed), and parents.

PSA at Hop Brook provides parents and teachers an opportunity to join together in providing “ our “ children with enriching programs and activities throughout the school year.  Your active involvement will benefit not only your child, but the entire school community. 

PUBLICITY From time to time, newspaper reporters or television cameramen take pictures of our schools and write articles about various programs.  Most children love to be involved in these activities. If you do not want this to occur, tell your child.  Also, send a note to your child’s teacher and we will try to minimize the chance of this occurring.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS program offers children the opportunity to develop literacy skills through Naugatuck' Language Arts Curriculum.  Some elements include: shared reading, independent reading, readers' workshop, guided reading, literature circles, and literature study.

REGISTRATION for children moving to Naugatuck from any other town requires the student to have a transfer card from the previous school and a  copy of the last report card. We need a copy of the last physical your child had, birth certificate and two forms of proof of residency. prior to this registration.  Complete immunization records are required before a child may be admitted.

SELLING  Students are not to bring items from home to school for sale.  The school cannot be responsible for missing items.

SHORTENED SCHOOL DAY  dismissal is at 12:30 P.M.

SUSPENSION/EXPULSION will be in compliance with Connecticut Statutes.

TARDY STUDENTS must report to the office before entering the classroom.  It is very important to be on time for school each day.

TELEPHONES are for school use only. The students should make only emergency calls during the day.  Phone calls should not be made in lieu of forgotten notes from home or permission to go to a friend's house.

TRUANCY occurs when a student is late or absent from school without permission from a parent or guardian or when the number of unexcused absences number four a month or ten a year.  This is a serious offense and will result in disciplinary action, per Public Act 10-198a regarding truancy.

VIDEOS must be "G" rated.

VISITORS are always welcome. Arrangements must be made by contacting the office or administration at 720-5231. You will need to sign in at the office and a pass will be given.

WALKERS should not arrive at school before 8:10 a.m.  Please do not ride bicycles, scooters, roller blades, etc. to school.
