Board Members
Meeting Date: 10/1/08 Minutes: The
meeting was called to order at 6:35pm and said the Pledge of Allegiance. Approval
of Minutes: Heather
Willets made a motion to approve the minutes from the 9/3. Andy Alves
seconded the motion. The motion was carried. Presidents
Report:
President Diane Parzyck thanked everyone who helped with the Back to School
Social! She also thanked everyone who attended and made the event a great
success! The
Fall Festival will be on October 17 from 6-8. The “special guest” will be
there around 7pm. Volunteers are needed for the craft table, face painting,
bake table, raffle table and for assisting with the games. Christine Viele
volunteered to assist with the face painting. The
Scholastic Book Fair will be October 21-23. Set-up will be October 20 at
3:30pm and volunteers are needed. There will be a raffle and there will be a
parent evening on Wednesday evening from 6pm-8pm. We are looking for a
volunteer to dress-up in a costume for the fair. Room
Parent notices went home on Friday. Second Vice President Sandy Minasian will
be notifying Room Parents shortly. Rosenblatt’s
Department Store in Naugatuck will be selling Maple Hill Spiritwear at the
store. Sales information will be going home, but people can stop down to the
store and they will show anyone the available choices. The
PTO is looking to do a used book collection for two weeks in November. More
information will be coming home on this. First
Vice President Sherri Hopkins reported that the fundraiser totaled almost
$21,000 in sales including the online sales, which gives the school
approximately $10,000 in profit! She reported that we basically need to earn
$50 per student to effectively fundraise for a budget of $23,000 with a total
of 470 students. We are off to a good start, but we still have work to do.
She acknowledged the classes that achieved over $1000 in sales and handed out
a list of the total sales for each class. Principals
Report:
Principal Cheryl Kane welcomed everyone and congratulated all the Students of
Month who were being honored this evening for being good citizens! She
reviewed the upcoming calendar and the upcoming spirit days. She advised that
there were now 460 students and 7 new teachers. There is also a new Physical
Education teacher starting next week. She also reported that the fundraiser
pick-up is tentatively scheduled for 10/29. At this time-the
Student’s of the Month were honored along with their teachers and their
parents. Each student was acknowledged, the teachers read why they were
chosen and Mrs. Ciuollo photographed each student with their parents and
teachers. BOE
Report: Board
of Education member Rocky Vitale advised the District Goals for 2007-2010: 1.
Achieve
academic success in reading, writing, mathematics and science 2.
Work
for a positive community and school partnership 3.
Expand
high quality early education opportunities for all children He
advised that there was work being done on many of the schools in the district
and that the High School work on the roof was just completed. They have
proposed an additional 3% cut off the budget. There is a 10 year plan in
place to redo all the HVAC in all the schools in order to improve the overall
energy efficiency in all buildings. Teachers

representative Pamela Fickel asked for additional volunteers for guided
reading. Treasurers

Diane Parzyck reviewed each line item of the budget. We will vote on the
budget at the November PTO meeting. New
Business:
Box Tops coordinator Tracy O’Connell reported that the next drawing will be
on October 10th. She reported that parents can help the school
earn additional points by visiting the Box Tops site and registering and
shopping via the Box Tops site or even just clicking from one site to another
through the site. She asked everyone to go to the site and register. Emily
Freel volunteered to be the coordinator for Tyson Project A+. Notices will be
coming home with more information on the program. Diane
Parzyck and Sherri Hopkins discussed options for additional fundraisers
including: ·
Direct
TV-if people sign up, Direct TV will donate to the school ·
Target-if
people use their Target credit card, a percentage of sales can go to the
school ·
BJ’s
membership drive-same fundraiser as last year-for each new membership the
school earns funds ·
Pizza
Card-selling cards for local pizza establishments Sherri
will continue to research these options and send notices home as we move
forward with any of the above fundraising options. Samantha
Stirk discussed the “Three For Me” program and advised parents that the PTO
is asking for 3 hours of volunteer time to the school. Parents who sign the
agreement and then achieve their 3 hours will be recognized on a bulletin
board in the school using hand prints. Information will be coming home on the
program. The
meeting was adjourned at 7:55pm. Minutes are pending
approval at next PTO meeting scheduled for 11/5/08 at 7pm.

Welcome Back to School Ice Cream Social was fantastic! Thank you to those who
helped with the planning and with the event! We hope everyone had fun! ·
Congratulations
to the Students of the Month who were honored at the PTO Meeting on 10/1 for
Outstanding Citizenship! The students looked wonderful and all the parents,
students and teachers who attended had a wonderful time! It was a great way
to show the students how proud we all are of them! Way to go!!! UPCOMING EVENTS ·
Fall

Great American Fundraiser is complete and we did fantastic! Thank you to
everyone who participated! The whole school made approximately $10,000 in
profit based upon preliminary results! What a great way to start the year!
This money helps to pay for field trips, school assemblies and other fun
events for the year! Thank you once again for supporting our school! ·

ANNOUNCEMENTS ·
Library
schedules and volunteer forms have been sent home. This is a great way to get
involved with your child’s class. Contact Mrs. Wilson if you would like to

Literacy
volunteers are a key part of the curriculum at Maple Hill School. If you are

Please
remember to turn in Box Tops for Education. The next drawing for Box Tops
will be on 10/10! Help the school and help your child’s class win a
reward! ·

school can earn additional Box Tops points if parents visit www.boxtops4education.com. Register on the site for
our school and then shop or simply visit other sites through the site and our
school can earn additional points! Please take the time to visit the site,
register, point and click!!!! ·
In
addition to Box Tops and Campbell’s Soup Labels, the PTO will now be
collecting “Tyson Project A+ Labels” as well! Look for the “Project A+” label
on your favorite Tyson projects and save the ENTIRE label as directed and
send them in. Notices will be going home with more information, but start
saving those labels now!!!Every little bit helps the school! NEXT
