Important Information
1. SUMMER ‘SCAPE "2000" will be in session Monday, July 3 through Friday, July 28, 2000. The first session will be nine days, the second session will be ten days.

ALL CLASSES ARE HELD AT NAUGATUCK HIGH SCHOOL
2. Please be sure to have your child on the patio by 8:30 a.m. Teachers will be bringing children into the building at 8:35 a.m. so that classes may start promptly at 8:40 a.m. Each child will be scheduled for three classes and a snack period.
3. The snack period will be held daily from 10:45 am-10:55 am. Students provide their own snacks.(no glass bottles, please)
4. Participation in this summer school is strictly voluntary and all students must provide their own transportation. It is expected that each person enrolled will make every effort to attend class daily and on time.
5. ALL STUDENTS MUST BE DROPPED OFF AND PICKED UP ON THE COVERED PATIO AREA. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE PATIO AREA UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. PARK IN ONE OF THE TWO PARKING LOTS ONLY! NO PARKING ALONG CURBS. FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD(REN), YOUR COOPERATION IS IMPERATIVE.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
1. All students will be registered on a first received, first recorded basis.
2. Early registration increases the chance of getting your first choice offering, however, there are no guarantees.
3. A minimum number of students is necessary for a course offering to be implemented. The Director must cancel any course offering that does not meet the minimum student requirement.
4. May 19, 2000 is the deadline for registration.
5. In the event of capacity enrollment, the program reserves the right to reject applications due to limited facilities, safety hazards, or inadequate supervision.

7. ALWAYS complete the alternate course selection of the registration form. This is necessary due to the possibility of canceled courses or scheduling conflicts. List your course selections in your ORDER OF PREFERENCE.
8. Students in grades K-5 must register for three courses. Students in grades 6-8 may take individual courses.
9. All students must make payment in full at time of registration. Registration forms will not be recorded without payment.

Students in this two period program will receive individualized and small group instruction to improve their skills in reading. Phonetic awareness and reading strategies will be emphasized to help your child become a lifelong reader. While fostering a love of books, we will practice much needed skills in the language arts areas to provide curriculum experiences for your child to meet with success in the classroom.
2. GETTING READY FOR KINDERGARTEN 9:45
This course will help children to gear up for going to Kindergarten in the fall. We will work on following directions, team work, taking turns, motor skills and cooperation. Our days will be filled with fun, games, color and shape activities as well as art projects.
3. ART IN ACTION Grades K-1 9:45
Here’s a class packed with exciting activities that children will love. We will be reading a favorite children’s book every day and creating art that reinforces the story.
4. LITTLE MATH MASTERS (first session only) Grade K-1 8:40
A hands-on collection of activities to present or reinforce concepts needed for math success. Areas explored will be patterning, sorting/classifying, counting, comparing, graphing and measuring. Flexible & fun!
5. BUSY BEES Grades K-1 11:00
Get ready to buzz into literature and art that’s just right for little hands. Listen to a delightful story, then create a fun art project. Bring a smock—go home with a smile.
6. T-BALL FOR BUDDING BALLPLAYERS Grades K-1 8:40
Join the team! Have fun learning fair play, running the bases, catching, and swinging the bat. If you are five or six and not quite ready for the big leagues, this is the team for you! Gloves optional—whiffle balls, bats will be used.
7. BOOK COOKS! Grades K-1 9:45
This literature based cooking class is sure to stir-up a batch of eager readers. An entertaining children’s book will be read each day, followed by a safe, simple, no-bake snack created by the children.
8. HODGE-PODGE Grades K-1 11:00
A great introduction to kindergarten or first grade. Favorite children’s book each day and a variety of fun activities to go with them. Songs, poems, games and easy art projects. Time to talk and listen to other kids. Wonderful fun for children while enhancing early learning skills.
9. FITNESS FUN Grades K-2 8:40
Children will participate in fun, physical activities. There will be dancing, exercise, games and an overall enjoyment of how much fun being healthy can be.

11. CLAY CONCOCTIONS Grades K-2 8:40
Children will use a variety of ingredients to create their own clay concoctions including edible chocolate clay, salt dough, and crepe-paper clays. Clay will be used to create clay clown beads and other fun objects.
12. WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY Grades K-2 9:45
With the help of their favorite Disney characters, students will participate in hands-on activities in language arts, math, science, music, no-bake cooking and arts and crafts.
13. ERIC CARLE CLASSICS Grades K-2 8:40
We will read The Hungry Caterpillar, The Busy Spider, and Papa Please Get the Moon For Me, plus more. We will do a project with each book. We will make caterpillars, sew an apron, paint a night sky and cook pancakes. (Students will need ½ yard of fabric and ½ yard of ribbon)
14. CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG Grades K-2 11:00
With the help of Clifford and his pal, Emily Elizabeth, students will participate in activities in language arts, math, science, arts & crafts, music and no-bake cooking.
15. CREEPY CRAWLERS Grades K-2 9:45
Students will explore the outdoors to find out about ants, beetles, spiders and worms. Children will discover how these creepy crawlers live and what they do. Projects include a worm farm, spider hunt and making your own ant.
16. LET’S EAT Grades K-2 11:00
Come enjoy cooking:baking chocolate chip cookies, eating M&M’s, gummy worms and much more. We will explore math and food while reading stories like "Ten Black Dots","Inch by Inch", "The Hungry Caterpillar", and "The Doorbell Rang".
17. GYMNASTICS Grades K-3 11:00
Students will be introduced to basic tumbling skills and different equipment in gymnastics. Students will work at their own ability level. Great for gross motor skills and balance!
18. GETTING READY FOR FIRST GRADE Grade 1 8:40
Is your child ready for first grade? This class will focus on readiness activities such as alphabet matching, sight words, concentration, initial consonant sounds, stories, songs and much, much more.
19. READY, SET, READ (first session only) Grades 1-2 9:45
A read aloud story every day and a fun activity. Is that all? No, children will also be given an opportunity to make predictions, discuss characters, significant details and main ideas. Many reading strategies will be reinforced throughout the program.

Come and meet our insect neighbors that aren’t always seen. In this class, students will explore the insect world through books, hands-on viewing, searching and other fun activities. See bugs up close, catch them in the fields and watch them hatch.
21. FAIRY TALES Grades 1-2 9:45
Come all ye princes and princesses to the enchanted world of fairy tales. Each day will feature a familiar fairy tale to be read and followed with a related activity.
22. NATURE’S WONDERS Grades 1-2 9:45
From rainbows and flowers to bugs and worms! Hands-on projects, experiments and discoveries. Wonderful children’s stories, nature walks and crafts. Discover (and appreciate) the amazing things right under your nose.
23. ARTS & CRAFTS Grades 1-2 11:00
We’ll create summer crafts that are easy to make and certain to please. Activities such as Tootsie Roll flowers & dazzling dragonflies will be included in the classes.
24. PUPPETRY Grades 1-3 9:45
Puppetry is an art form that encourages originality and personal expression. Children will explore the history of puppetry and four specific types as they create several finger and hand operated puppets using recyclables, fabric and papier-mache. A puppet theater will also be constructed. The course will conclude with a puppet show directed by our young puppeteers.
25. WRITERS RULE! Grade 2 9:45
Children will learn how to organize their writing. They will write a first draft, elaborate on each event, edit and revise. Each student will leave the class with a writing folder.
26. IT’S A PARTY Grades 1-3 11:00
Do you like to dance? This is the class for you. We’ll learn the chicken dance, macarena, polka and many more. Excellent for gross and small motor skills.
27. THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY CENTER Grade 2-3 9:45
As all parents know, children love to celebrate birthdays. This course will treat every day as a birthday! Students will sing songs, make birthday cards, complete birthday graphs, make art projects and complete many other fun activities all based on a birthday theme. A birthday party for all participants will be celebrated on the last day of class.

Come join Ms. Frizzle and her class on "field trips" aboard the Magic School Bus. On our adventures we’ll learn about the solar system, dinosaurs, bees, electricity and other exciting topics. Fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride!
30. FAIRY TALE THEATER Grades 2-3 11:00
We will have a blast creating our own theater productions! We will keep busy with choosing plays, selecting roles, learning lines, rehearsing and creating our own costumes and props. The grand finale will be a performance for family and friends on the last day.
31. HANDS-ON ENVIRONMENT Grades 2-3 9:45
Discover a world of simple wonders by exploring the environment in which you live. Learn the answers to the questions: Why do ducks have webbed feet? How can snow keep an animal warm? How do trees change from season to season? Which bird sings, "pleased, pleased, pleased to meet you?" and many more. Also dissect flowers, play spider games, and make your own bird’s nest. Fun for all!!
32. CREATURES OF THE NIGHT Grades 2-3 8:40
What happens at night while you’re sleeping? Examine nighttime animals and their habitats through live animals, models, stories, games and creation of habitats.
33. SUMMER SOCCER Grades 2-3 8:40
You’ll get a kick out of learning specific soccer skills and communication skills while having a ball playing soccer games. Having fun while learning is our goal.
34. ROCK COLLECTING Grades 2-3 11:00
Students will bring in rocks and start their own rock collections. We will research and discover different kinds of rocks and how they were formed. Students will utilize their observation skills by sorting, classifying and experimenting with the rocks.
35. TRACK & FIELD Grades 2-3 9:45
Cross country (1 mile), a softball toss, sprinting, relay race and long jumping will be the events in which young olympians will participate. We will also stress proper stretching and hydration in the summer heat. Students should bring water bottles.
36. IT’S ALL ABOUT GAMES Grades 2-4 8:40
Have fun and challenging experiences with games and group activities. Use your imagination, problem-solving skills, spontaneity and socialization skills to play interesting and thought provoking games.
37. WEAVING & STITCHERY Grades 2-4 8:40
Children will explore weaving using a variety of materials on a number of unique and simple looms. Belts, bracelets, baskets and woven samples will be created during class time. Simple stitchery techniques on burlap will also be explored.
38. ARTS & CRAFTS OF MEXICO Grades 2-4 11:00
"Hola Amigos!" Enjoy a taste of Mexico without leaving home. Children will learn about the Mexican culture through the creation of art & artifacts including pottery, yarn painting, pierced paper designs and pinatas. Our class will conclude with a fiesta (using a pinata created by the class).

Children will discover how maps help us. We will learn to read different types of maps and then experience making several kinds. Class activities will include making a topographical map of Connecticut, planning a road trip, and constructing a world globe.

Students will gain hands-on experience in a variety of hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling and slab rolling. The objects they have made will be fired in a kiln to 1900º and will become a permanent, treasured piece of artwork.

44. DRAWING/PRINTMAKING Grades 3-4 8:40
This course is designed for students who want to learn about color through various printmaking techniques. There will be a lot of creativity with many finished products to take home.
45. METAL MADNESS Grades 3-5 11:00
Students will be "crazed" with creativity while working on wire figure sculptures, metal lanterns, ancient shields, cultural masks and wind chimes.
46. KIDROBICS Grades 3-5 11:00
Students will learn different types of aerobic moves and routines. These routines will consist of 4-5 simple moves allowing students to gain confidence in their ability to move to music. Children will be active 90% of the class time; therefore, sneakers and comfortable clothing are required.
47. KALEIDOSCOPES Grades 3-5 9:45
Students will explore the spectrum of light and color. Projects will range from radial designs, optical illusion to the construction of their own kaleidoscope.

Take a trip back in time to ancient Egypt. We’ll do many exciting projects! Learn hieroglyphics and build your own pyramid. All new projects, so travel with us again to ancient Egypt.

Exciting athletic fun playing sports like kickball, dodgeball, basketball, and whiffleball. Basic rules will be reinforced.

We’ll travel the world through crafts. We’ll learn about different cultures while making exciting projects. This class is hands-on fun with mind enriching experiences.

Have you ever wondered how actors learn to act? Here’s the class for you. Try your hand at acting. Have fun exploring introductory, creative, dramatic techniques.
52. SUPER SCIENCE CONCOCTIONS Grade 4 11:00
Fizz, gurgle, bubble, and brew! Have outrageous science fun. Explore density with hovering veggies, explode colors in milk to learn about molecular movement and be a perfume chemist using various solutes. Create sticky water, jiggling gelatin worms, lava, creepy water ghosts and more! Experience the wonder of science while making magical mixtures. Great fun!

53. CT MASTERY TESTING READING WORKSHOP Grades 4-5 8:40
This course will specialize in small group instruction. We will concentrate on reading strategies to help concentration, word decoding, and author’s purpose. Students will also keep their writing skills fresh through the instruction of organizing and composing narrative or expository writing pieces.

Come & explore maskmaking from around the world. Students will have the chance to make a variety of decorative masks with different materials. This class can be messy, but the messier it is, the more fun!
58. WATERCOLOR PAINTING Grades 4-5 9:45
Creative expression is the key to this class. Basic painting techniques will be taught, along with special effects. In addition to water & paint, we will be using masking tape and salt to create beautiful paintings.
59. PAPER MAGIC Grades 4-5 11:00
What can we do to a piece of paper to create beautiful works of art? During this class, we will learn origami techniques, paper cutting designs and paper sculptures.
60. ADVERTISING MANIA Grades 4-6 9:45
Use your creative thinking skills to design your very own product. Then, work on advertising it. Activities include creating a magazine, radio and television advertisement. We will be acting out our advertisements in class.
61. DRAWING/PAINTING Grades 4-6 11:00
This course is aimed at the student who wants to learn how to draw realistically and then paint with some knowledge of the chemical properties of color. We will be experimenting with various painting approaches.
62. ART FROM NATURE Grades 4-6 8:40
Create unique and beautiful artwork using materials found in nature. Anyone can do it! Easy and fun crafts made from things you can find in your own backyard! Enjoy making original paintings, displays, and arrangements. Projects will include: plant rubbing, collages, dried flower arrangements, mushroom prints, egg carton gardens and more.
63. CARTOONING! Grades 4-6 8:40
In this class students will create their own characters, design a comic strip and make a class comic book of which each student will receive a copy. Students will also create their own flip movies where they can animate the characters they created.
64. HARRY POTTER’S PLACE Grades 4-6 9:45
Come & together we’ll explore the magical world of Harry Potter as we, together, read and discuss Harry in his first book. Bring your own copy with you.
65. EXPLORING SPANISH Grades 4-6 8:40
Basic introduction to the Spanish language and Spanish/Latin American cultures. The course will be taught through varied activities such as games, songs, simple dialogues and stories.

Basic introduction to the French language and culture of France and Canada through varied activities such as games, songs, simple dialogues and stories.
67. FOREIGN LANGUAGE SAMPLER Grades 4-6 11:00
Brief, yet comprehensive introduction to the three most widely spoken romance languages: French, Spanish, and Italian. Students will see the languages relation to each other as well as their connection to English.
68. HAVING FUN WITH MODEL AIRPLANES Grades 4-6 9:45
Students will learn basic components of an airplane. They will identify the parts of an airplane and be able to describe how flight takes place. Teacher will provide various types of model airplanes and demonstrate how they fly. Students will construct their own planes.

Students will learn the fundamentals of cheerleading: motion techniques, voice, sideline cheers, floor cheers and pyramid techniques. Dance will also be included. Special emphasis on safety in cheerleading.
71. GETTING READY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL Grade 5 8:40
A hands-on approach to Middle School Readiness that includes mastering time management and reviewing basic study skills. A fun approach to dispell the fears of entering middle school.

Students will learn basic racquet skills and fundamentals of the game through drills and games. Students should provide their own rackets.

75. THE "ULTIMATE"IN SUMMER FUN! Grades 5-8 11:00
What’s ultimate about summer besides being out of school? Play Ultimate Frisbee—that’s what! This is a cardiovascular game where two teams play to get a frisbee in their end zone (similar to soccer except you’re throwing a frisbee instead of kicking a ball). Students will learn different ways to throw and catch a frisbee, so put on your sneakers and try something new. It will be a great time for both girls and boys.
76. BASKETBALL HOOP ACTION Grades 5-8 8:40
This course includes practice at key skills—shooting & dribbling. Full court and half court games will be provided to improve your basketball skills.
77. WATERCOLOR PAINTING Grades 5-8 8:40
This course is designed for young artists who will learn the fundamentals and develop the proper techniques in watercolor paintings. Learn in transparent and opaque watercolors with emphasis on individual creative expression
78. HAND-CRAFTED JEWELRY Grades 5-8 11:00
The basic principles of jewelry construction will be explored with emphasis on creative and artistic expression. Students will create unique jewelry and explore possibilities using a wide variety of materials.

Through physical activity, students will take part in cooperative games and challenges. Each student will be asked to work with a partner and in small or large groups. The activities provided allow students to expand their thinking process & enhance social/emotional well being. Sneakers & comfortable clothing are recommended.
83. DRAWING/PAINTING Grades 6-8 9:45
This course is designed for middle school students who want to study how to use color to achieve what we want in our paintings. We will also learn some basic drawing skills before we unleash the power of color.
84. BABYSITTING Grades 6-8 11:00
Come and learn all the basics of babysitting: procedures, games, how to care for different age groups, simple discipline techniques. All you ever wanted to know about babysitting and more.
85. TENSION CONTROL Grades 6-8 9:45
The purpose of this class is for students to learn techniques of tension control. The class will consist of activities and discussions dealing with stress. By practicing in and outside of class, students will gain the knowledge and understanding of how to react to stressful and tense situations in an appropriate manner.
86. EXPLORING DINOTOPIA Grades 6-8 (1st session only) 11:00
We will read Dinotopia by artist, James Gurney and its sequel The World Beneath. This adventure saga is about the discovery of an unknown continent in the early 1800’s where people and dinosaurs co-exist peacefully. Activities will include playing a Dinotopia street game, encoding and decoding messages using the footprint alphabet and playing Dinotopia music.
87. SUMMER OLYMPICS Grades 6-8 (2nd session only) 11:00
We will learn about the development of the Olympic Games through history. Highlights of the Summer Games in Australia will be viewed. This course will end with a mini-competition with track and field events.
88. BREAKFAST CLUB Grades 7-8 8:40
Students will learn how to make a scrumptious breakfast every day. The theme will include healthy cooking for healthy living. Omelets, muffins, granola bars. . .FOOD FEE: $10.00 payable to instructor
89. TENNIS, ANYONE? Grades 7-8 9:45
Students will learn basic racquet skills and fundamentals of the game through drills and games. Students should provide their own rackets.
90. HEALTHY SNACKING Grades 7-8 9:45
Children will learn how to make quick healthy snacks. Popcorn balls, yogurt pops, etc.

Each pupil will explore rolling clay slabs and methods for assembly into small projects. The students will create a house-type covered box. The projects will be kiln-fired for permanence for storing all kinds of treasures.
