GED INFORMATION

PLEASE NOTE
~IMPORTANT INFORMATION~

In January 2002, the GED Testing Service in Washington, DC will release a new series of GED Tests – GED 2002 – to replace the current 1988 edition of the GED tests. The release of GED 2002 will significantly influence GED test-takers in Connecticut. Because of the changes in the test, the scores earned on the current and previous tests cannot be combined with scores from the new tests. Adults in Connecticut who are currently working toward their GED diploma will have until the last day of testing in December 2001 to successfully complete and pass the current edition.

Therefore, any GED candidate who has not successfully completed the GED Tests by January 1, 2002 must start again with the 2002 Series GED Tests to qualify for a Connecticut State High School Diploma.

September 30, 2001 will be the last date for GED candidates to initiate testing with the current GED test series. The GED Tests being administered in Connecticut from October 1, 2001 through December 31, 2001 will be made available to only those individuals who have been previously tested. NO FIRST TIME GED TEST TAKERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO TEST DURING THIS PERIOD.

WHAT IS THE GED AND WHO ISSUES IT?

To earn a GED (General Education Development) Diploma, students must take the GED exam.

This national exam includes five tests in the areas of writing skills, social studies, science, interpreting literature and the arts, and mathematics.

A Connecticut State High School Diploma is issued to those who meet the minimum standard scores.

HOW DOES A PERSON REGISTER FOR THE GED EXAM?

Anyone wanting to take the GED exam is required to take a FREE practice test at the Naugatuck Continuing Education Office. From the results of this practice test, it will be determined if preparation classes are recommended or if the student is sufficiently prepared to register for the GED exam.

All applicants must present a State of Connecticut photo ID at the time of registration and testing.

WHAT TYPE OF PREPARATION CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE IN NAUGATUCK?

Classes are available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The instruction is individualized and students may enter or exit at any time.

HOW DOES A STUDENT RECEIVE GED TEST RESULTS?

GED test results are mailed directly to the students from the Connecticut State Department.
