HOW TO GET STARTED - THREE EASY STEPS!
1. Individuals interested in completing high school should call the Naugatuck Continuing Education office. You must be at least 16 years old, officially withdrawn from high school and not have a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
2. The student will be scheduled for an assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to provide the counselor with information concerning the student’s entry level reading and math ability. There is no pass or fail.
3. The student will then meet with a counselor who will explain program options. The student’s academic background will be discussed and the student will then be placed in the appropriate program.
HELPFUL HINTS TO PREPARE FOR MEETING WITH A COUNSELOR!
1. Call or write to the last high school you attended (and any other schools where courses were taken) and ask for an unofficial copy of your transcript. If you are under the age of 18, you will also need an official letter of withdrawal from your high school.
2. Write down any information regarding employment, occupational training, military or volunteer service experiences. Bring this information with you and give it to the counselor.
3. Counselors are available for assessments Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings between the hours of 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. when school is in session. Other hours are available upon request.

To earn a GED (General Education Development) Diploma, students must take the GED exam.
This national exam includes five tests in the areas of writing skills, social studies, science, interpreting literature and the arts, and mathematics.
A Connecticut State High School Diploma is issued to those who meet the minimum standard scores.
HOW DOES A PERSON REGISTER FOR THE GED EXAM?
Anyone wanting to take the GED exam is required to take a FREE practice test at Naugatuck Continuing Education. From the results of this practice test, it will be determined if preparation classes are recommended or if the student is sufficiently prepared to register for the GED exam.
All applicants must present a State of Connecticut photo ID at the time of registration and testing.
WHAT TYPE OF PREPARATION CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE IN NAUGATUCK?
Classes are available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The instruction is individualized and students may enter or exit at any time.
HOW DOES A STUDENT RECEIVE GED TEST RESULTS?
GED test results are mailed directly to the students from the Connecticut State Department.

WHAT IS A CREDIT DIPLOMA AND WHO ISSUES IT?
The Naugatuck Continuing Education High School Credit Diploma is issued by the Naugatuck Board of Education. Diplomas are awarded at the graduation ceremony in May.
WHO CAN EARN A CREDIT DIPLOMA?
Individuals wishing to enroll in Naugatuck Continuing Education must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be at least 16 years old.
2. Must be officially withdrawn from high school.
HOW MANY CREDITS MUST BE EARNED TO RECEIVE A NAUGATUCK CONTINUING EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA?
At least 22 credits must be earned. The following academic requirements must be met:
English 4 credits
Mathematics 3 credits
Social Studies* 3 credits
Science 3 credits
Vocational/Arts 1 credit
Electives 8 credits
(*2 credits must be U.S. History)
HOW CAN CREDITS BE EARNED?
CLASSROOM COMPONENT:
One high school credit will be awarded for successful completion of a minimum of 48 hours of classroom work. Counselors will have a list of current class offerings.

CURRICULUM PACKET PROGRAM
Students work on an individual basis completing work required for each packet. Testing is done after each strand to determine the student’s success with this program. Counselors will determine which packets are necessary for diploma requirements.

ARE THERE OTHER WAYS TO EARN CREDITS?
Credits may be earned in one of the following ways:
1. transferred from accredited university, college, community college, technical college, high school or vocational/technical schools that meet state criteria
2. independent study projects.
3. a maximum of two elective credits may be awarded for military experience and/or training.
4. occupational category-a maximum of two credits may be awarded for occupational experience and training; work experience, occupational license, apprentice training, formalized job training, home management skills. Each option recognizes prior learning experiences that adults may have achieved. Each option provides the student with the possibility of earning a credit.
5. community service category-one credit may be granted for 100 hours or more of community service/volunteer work with the same organization or institution. One-half credit may be granted for 50-99 hours of community service/volunteer work with the same agency.
The counselor and director have the final approval of the above.

Adult Basic Education is for students who need to learn basic skills in reading and math. This program will aid someone in acquiring the skills necessary to enter a diploma program. Students may enter at any time. Instruction is individualized.

This course offers students practice strategies for responding to the test questions on structure, reading comprehension, vocabulary, oral proficiency, and listening comprehension for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. A comprehensive grammar review will be included. Students will be able to practice on actual exams. An excellent review of grammar and test-taking will make it easy to score well. Students must pre-register.

This course offers a brief introduction to American history and government (nation, state and local). We give you a review of the typical questions asked on the Naturalization Exam. If needed, you will receive help filling out the naturalization applications.

Art For Everyone
This class is for artists beginning or advanced in any two-dimensional media (charcoal, pastel, watercolor, oil painting, etc.). Taught by a state-certified art teacher, each student will receive one-on-one art lessons in the desired medium of choice. Students must bring their own supplies; first-timers will receive a materials list from the instructor.

Pottery Workshop
If you have ever wanted to try real pottery-making using moist clay, a potter’s wheel, and other hand-building methods, this is the course for you. We will explore various hand-building methods of creating pottery. You will be able to practice on one of our electric potter’s wheels and make "thrown" pots to glaze and take home. Projects will include a decorative tile, a mug, various bowls, a tray, a basket of flowers along with pots thrown on the wheel. All clay, glazes and firing are included in the course fee.

Country Folk Painting On Wood
Did you ever say to yourself, "I’d like to paint that myself?" Now you can, and you will be surprised at the results. Create a Scrapbook Photo Album
You will learn techniques that are simple, creative and fun making a 5x7 expandable scrapbook photo album. We begin the class with a "how to" presentation on the materials needed to create a meaningful and affordable album. Course includes full use of supplies and acid free pen for labeling and journal writing. Please bring a pair of scissors and 6-8 photos of one event or theme. (no Polaroids please).

Exploring the Mysteries of Miracles in the Bible
In this class, we will look at ten miracles in the Bible that have to do with healing, creation, deliverance, nature, the law of love and more. For instance, the miracle at Cana where the water was turned into wine at the wedding; and the miracle performed on the blind man at the Pool of Siloam. To best understand these miracles, we will be using video segments for each lesson filmed at the locations in Israel where the miracles actually occurred. You will be as much a part of the audience as the group of people who accompanied the camera crew when the tapes were made. You, too, can begin to experience miracles in your own life.

Civilian Police Academy
The Naugatuck Police Department Civilian Police Academy started in 1998. The Police Academy was initiated in order to make the residents of Naugatuck aware of the responsibilities and daily operations of the Naugatuck Police Department Uniform Division. We also will enlighten the public of the responsibilities of the Department’s Detective and Youth Divisions, and the investigative techniques and scientific resources available to them. Discussions will be held on Community Policing and what part it plays in the Police field. During the course duration, we will explain any and all misconceptions the public has concerning the Police Department and policing in general. We will explain the budget process and how vital it is to the Department’s goals. Training courses, both mandated and optional, will be discussed, as well as the hiring practices of the Department and mandated state law in the training of new recruits. But first and foremost, it is the Department’s goal to explain and thank the public for their support and trust , and to explain how very important it is to a modern and progressive Police Department.

Karate for People With Physical Disabilities
This course is designed for people who have physical disabilities and would like to learn the art of self-defense. Jeff Laliberte, who is a physically disabled resident of Naugatuck, has been teaching this course for the past five years. The class that has been successful in other areas will use the style of Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art that encourages personal growth and development. Mr. Laliberte holds a 4th degree black belt and is a member of the Cheezic Tang Soo Do Federation.

Reiki: An Introduction

Class Cancellation
In the event of inclement weather, listen to radio station WATR-1320, WWCO-1280, WTIC-1050, WQQW-1590, WCLI-960, or WKCI-101.3 AM or television channels 8 or 30. Whenever the Naugatuck Public Schools are closed, Continuing Education classes do not meet. If classes are cancelled, they are postponed until the following week. Classes are held on staff development days.

All of these courses can be strenuous; consult a physician before signing up. By enrolling in these courses, you indicate you have no physical condition or health history that would make your participation hazardous to your health.
