THREE EASY STEPS TO GET STARTED

1. Individuals interested in completing high school should call the Naugatuck Continuing Education office. You must be at least 16 years old, officially withdrawn from high school and not have a high school diploma or a GED certificate.

2. The student will be scheduled for an assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to provide the counselor with information concerning the student’s entry level reading and math ability. There is no pass or fail.

3. The student will then meet with a counselor who will explain program options. The student’s academic background will be discussed and the student will then be placed in the appropriate program.
 
 

HELPFUL HINTS TO PREPARE FOR MEETING WITH A COUNSELOR!

1. Call or write to the last high school you attended (and any other schools where courses were taken) and ask for an unofficial copy of your transcript. If you are under the age of 18, you will also need an official letter of withdrawal from your high school.

2. Write down any information regarding employment, occupational training, military or volunteer service experiences. Bring this information with you and give it to the counselor.

3. Counselors are available for assessments Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings between the hours of 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. when school is in session. Other hours are available upon request.

Class Cancellation

In the event of inclement weather, listen to radio station FM WRCH 100.5, AM WATR-1320, WWCO-1280, WTIC-1050, WQQW-1590, WCLI-960, or WKCI-101.3 or television channels 3, 8 or 30. Whenever the Naugatuck Public Schools are closed, Continuing Education classes do not meet. However, classes are held on staff development days. If a class is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, it is held the following week on the same day and time.

Physical Education, Nature and Outdoor Courses

All of these courses can be strenuous; consult a physician before signing up. By enrolling in these courses, you indicate you have no physical condition or health history that would make your participation hazardous to your health.

Some of our courses are taught by people who may be financial planners, sales persons, or are actively involved in a business or profession that is related to the subjects they teach. We endorse their ability as instructors, but make no comment as to their professional skills or abilities or the value of any product they sell.

We reserve the right to change faculty, course content, location, and time and date of courses or cancel a class at any time. We only notify you if a class is canceled. Otherwise, the class will be held. Room location will be assigned the first night in the Continuing Education Office located at Naugatuck High School. If you must withdraw from any Continuing Education program, notify us at least three days prior to the beginning of the first class to be assured of receiving a full refund. An administrative charge of 25% may be charged after the first three days.

WHAT IS THE GED AND WHO ISSUES IT?

To earn a GED (General Education Development) Diploma, students must take the GED exam.

This national exam includes five tests in the areas of writing skills, social studies, science, interpreting literature and the arts, and mathematics.

A Connecticut State High School Diploma is issued to those who meet the minimum standard scores.

HOW DOES A PERSON REGISTER FOR THE GED EXAM?

Anyone wanting to take the GED exam is required to take a FREE practice test at the Naugatuck Continuing Education Office. From the results of this practice test, it will be determined if preparation classes are recommended or if the student is sufficiently prepared to register for the GED exam.

All applicants must present a State of Connecticut photo ID at the time of registration and testing.

WHAT TYPE OF PREPARATION CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE IN NAUGATUCK?

Classes are available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The instruction is individualized and students may enter or exit at any time.

HOW DOES A STUDENT RECEIVE GED TEST RESULTS?

GED test results are mailed directly to the students from the Connecticut State Department.

WHAT IS A CREDIT DIPLOMA AND WHO ISSUES IT?

The Naugatuck Continuing Education High School Credit Diploma is issued by the Naugatuck Board of Education. Diplomas are awarded at the graduation ceremony in May.
 

WHO CAN EARN A CREDIT DIPLOMA?

Individuals wishing to enroll in Naugatuck Continuing Education must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be at least 16 years old.

2. Must be officially withdrawn from high school.
 

HOW MANY CREDITS MUST BE EARNED TO RECEIVE A NAUGATUCK CONTINUING EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA?

At least 22 credits must be earned. The following academic requirements must be met:

English ................. 4 credits
Mathematics ............. 3 credits
Social Studies* ......... 3 credits
Science ................. 3 credits
Vocational/Arts ......... 1 credit
Electives ............... 8 credits
(*2 credits must be U.S. History)








HOW CAN CREDITS BE EARNED?

One high school credit will be awarded for the successful completion of a minimum of 48 hours of classroom work. Counselors will have a list of current class offerings.

Classroom Days/Hours:

Classes are offered as follows:

Monday/Wed. 6:00-8:45 p.m.

Tuesday/Thurs. 6:00-8:45 p.m.

Students work on an individual basis completing work required for each packet. Testing is done after each strand to determine the student’s success with this program. Counselors will determine which packets are necessary for diploma requirements.

4:00 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.

No test will be given after 8:15 pm.

Friday Hours:
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

No test will be given after 1 p.m.






ARE THERE OTHER WAYS TO EARN CREDITS?

Credits may be:

1. transferred from an accredited university, college, community college, technical college, high school or vocational/technical schools that meet state criteria

2. independent study projects.

3. a maximum of two elective credits may be awarded for military experience and/or training.

4. occupational category-a maximum of two credits may be awarded for occupational experience and training; work experience, occupational license, apprentice training, formalized job training, home management skills. Each option recognizes prior learning experiences that adults may have achieved. Each option provides the student with the possibility of earning a credit.

5. community service category-one credit may be granted for 100 hours or more of community service/volunteer work with the same organization or institution. One-half credit may be granted for 50-99 hours of community service/volunteer work with the same agency.

The counselor and director have the final approval of the above.

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE)

Adult Basic Education is for students who need to learn basic skills in reading and math. This program will aid someone in acquiring the skills necessary to enter a diploma program. Students may enter at any time. Instruction is individualized.

TOEFL

This course offers students practice strategies for responding to the test questions on structure, reading comprehension, vocabulary, oral proficiency, and listening comprehension for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. A comprehensive grammar review will be included. Students will be able to practice on actual exams. An excellent review of grammar and test-taking will make it easy to score well. Students must pre-register.

This course offers a brief introduction to American history and government (nation, state and local). 
We provide you with a review of the typical questions asked on the Naturalization Exam.

CRAFTS & HOBBIES

Art For Everyone
This class is for artists beginning or advanced in any two-dimensional media (charcoal, pastel, watercolor, oil painting, etc.). Taught by a state-certified art teacher, each student will receive one-on-one art lessons in the desired medium of choice. Students must bring their own supplies; first-timers will receive a materials list from the instructor.

Beginner Pen & Ink
You will learn the basic techniques needed to complete a pen and ink drawing along with pen control exercises. We will use vertical and horizontal lines, contour lines, cross hatching, stippling, scribble lines, wavy lines, highlights, shadows using a value chart, fur and feather techniques for animal drawings and line techniques for portraits. Students will study and learn each and every technique culminating in a pen and ink sketch as a final project.

Pottery Workshop I
If you have ever wanted to try real pottery-making using moist clay, a potter’s wheel, and other hand-building methods, this is the course for you. We will explore various hand-building methods of creating pottery. You will be able to practice on one of our electric potter’s wheels and make "thrown" pots to glaze and take home. Projects will include a decorative tile, a mug, various bowls, a tray, a basket of flowers along with pots thrown on the wheel. All clay, glazes and firing are included in the course fee.

NOTE:    This course if for people who have never taken the workshop with Kelly before.
There will be a Pottery Workshop II offered in the Winter/Spring for people who have taken Pottery Workshop I.

Creating A Colonial Floor Cloth & A Whole Lot More
You will explore the art of creating colonial floor cloths. Other options are to create place mats and table runners using the same techniques. You will learn how to make wind chimes, pin ornaments and house plaques out of clay. Reverse glass painting will be taught as well as decorating with pressed flowers.

Country Folk Painting On Wood
Did you ever say to yourself, "I’d like to paint that myself?" Now you can and you will be surprised at the results. Ten Miracles In The Bible
In this class we will look at ten miracles in the Bible about healing, creation, deliverance, nature, the laws of love and more. For instance, the miracle at Cana where the water was turned into wine at the wedding,; and the miracle performed on the blind man at the Pool of Siloam. To best understand these miracles, we will be using ten-minute video segments for each lesson filmed at the locations in Israel where the miracles actually occurred.

Reader’s Book of the Month Club

Professional Bartending
Learn to prepare today’s most popular drinks recipes like the Kamikaze and the Cosmopolitan as well as yesterday’s classic cocktails like the Martini and Manhattan. Instruction also includes opening and closing duties, product knowledge, and anything else needed to go from classroom to workplace upon successful completion of the course. Anyone who is 18 years or older, looking for a new skill which can be used immediately in restaurants, clubs, hotels or at catering companies, will benefit from this course. No real alcohol is used. Servers & Managers Alcohol Responsibility Training  (S.M.A.R.T. Certification for Servers of Alcohol)
This is a three hour certification course developed by those in the hospitality industry for the hospitality industry. Participants will learn how to identify signs of intoxication using the traffic light system as well as learning Connecticut’s liquor rules, regulations and laws. This course has an intense focus on checking I.D.’s properly and underage drinking. Certified SMART establishments are eligible for liquor liability insurance discounts.

West African Dance

Karate for People With Physical Disabilities
This course is designed for people who have physical disabilities and would like to learn the art of self-defense. Jeff Laliberte, who is a physically disabled resident of Naugatuck, has been teaching this course for the past five years. The class that has been successful in other areas will use the style of Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art that encourages personal growth and development. Mr. Laliberte holds a 4th degree black belt and is a member of the Tang Soo Do Masters Alliance.

Reiki: An Introduction

Keyboarding
This class is for both the beginning typists and those wanting to revive or build upon previously learned skills. Instruction will emphasize typing by touch for speed and accuracy on a personal computer.

Introduction to Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0
Participants will use Word to create, edit, name, save and print documents. Important word-processing functions such as editing, character formatting, setting margins and tabs, retrieving documents, spell checking and block operations for moving text will be introduced. Introduction to Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows
Excel is gaining popularity in the PC world as a powerful spreadsheet. This course will introduce you to what spreadsheets are and how they work, how to create and edit a spreadsheet, use the copy and move commands, and add and delete rows, columns and ranges. You will learn how to get your spreadsheet in readable printout form and you will be able to create and print graphs. After this class, you’ll have the capability to create, edit, retrieve, save, and printout Excel spreadsheets and graphs.

Web Page—Building a Home (Page) On The Net
You’ve sent –email and surfed the ‘Net, but now you want to make your presence known on the Web. During this course, you will receive all the tools you need to make this happen. It’s easy! Start with the basic hammer and nails of hyper-text markup language (HTML). Create a page with some of the readily available hand tools such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Assistant. Learn the power tools of web publishing with PageMill and HotDog Pro. If you build it—they will come!
